Santa Barbara Half Marathon November 5, 2005
My first Half Marathon 13.1 Miles. My official time was 2:28:31. I'm very happy with my time, however I was 2nd from the slowest in my age group 45-49. There were 1473 people that ran or walked in the Marathon. Walkers started 30 minutes earlier. The race results were mixed with walkers and runners.
I ran the first 9 miles with Carole and Dawn. Their pace was a little fast for me. The hills in Santa Barbara were something I hadn't trained enough for. At 9 miles, I had to walk for a brief hill. I almost caught up to them, but then came yet another hill... As it turned out, I only ran a few minutes slower than them over all they finished a 2:25:30, but that means the ran the last three miles one minute per mile faster than me.
Finishing a Half Marathon is quite an accomplishment for me. I was ready for it to be over at 6 miles. At 10 miles I developed and extreme side stitch (pain in the abdomen) usually caused by running too hard. At 12 miles, I was running with a 52 year old woman who was here instead of the New York Marathon because of an injury. She finished 5 seconds before me. When the race was over, I felt very nauseous. My teammates, Dawn and Mike gave me a ride back to my hotel, about a half mile. It would have been a rough walk. |
